A Single-Strand Annealing Protein Clamps DNA to Detect and Secure Homology
Repair of DNA breaks by single-strand annealing (SSA) is a major mechanism for the maintenance of genomic integrity. SSA is promoted by proteins (single-strand-annealing proteins [SSAPs]), such as eukaryotic RAD52 and λ phage Redβ. These proteins use a short single-stranded region to find sequence identity and initiate homologous recombination. However, it is unclear how SSAPs detect homology a...
متن کاملThe applications of NSOM/QDs-based single-molecule in situ detection on cell membrane
Near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) has been proved to be a useful nanotechnology tool for studying materials due to its highest optical resolution to break through the diffraction limit, but its applications in biomedical research are still limited. With the development of biology, medicine and chemistry, the methods to study life science in single molecule level are required. The hig...
متن کاملCultivated single-stranded DNA phages that infect marine Bacteroidetes prove difficult to detect with DNA-binding stains.
This is the first description of cultivated icosahedral single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) phages isolated on heterotrophic marine bacterioplankton and with Bacteroidetes hosts. None of the 8 phages stained well with DNA-binding stains, suggesting that in situ abundances of ssDNA phages are drastically underestimated using conventional methods for enumeration.
متن کاملNature of Interaction between Semiconducting Nanostructures and Biomolecules: Chalcogenide QDs and BNNT with DNA Molecules
Interactions of DNA oligomers with two categories of semiconducting nanostructureschalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) and boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs)owing to their widespread presence in bioinspired processes are investigated using the first-principles density functional theory and continuum solvent model. The chalcogenide QDs interact strongly at their metal centers featuring electrostatic i...
متن کاملThe struggle to detect circulating DNA
In various diseases, such as cancer, autoimmune disease, sepsis or myocardial infarction, elevated levels of circulating DNA can be measured. However, its predictive value is under debate. Circulating DNA in plasma is protein-bound (nucleosomal) DNA. Quantification of circulating DNA can be performed by real-time quantitative PCR or immunological methods such as ELISA. The diagnostic value of b...
